A bunch of new socks created after 8 February 2013 when The Bushranger blocked the previous batch. I am requesting checkuser because of the proclivity of this puppeteer to create sleepers. Most of the names include either "Chow" or "Kelvin" just like previous socks. The main topic interest is generally the Rolling Stones (including songs, albums, band members), but also other musical topics. This guy likes to redefine a person's occupation and musical instruments in the infobox. Please compare this old change to John Lennon by Chowkatsun kelvin, this old change to John Lennon by Chowkatsun9, to the following: this change to Brian Jones by Nanonano27, this change to Charlie Watts by Tsun Kan Chow, this change to Keith Richards by 阿浚, this change to Mick Jagger by Ka Ho Chow, this change to Mick Jagger by Andy-Kelvin, this change to Mick Jagger by Boy Kelvin, and this change to Mick Jagger by Ka Ho Mickey Chow. Binksternet (talk) 19:34, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to have been an incomplete SPI on this account in late May. Contributions follow an established pattern of:

  • unhelpful changes that often violate the MOS
  • contributions centering on music articles
  • Asian-sounding username

Articles edited by this user include:

I'm requesting a checkuser because this user apparently has a history of creating sleeper accounts. szyslak (t) 10:43, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Additional evidence: Per the CheckUser decline, I have provided diffs for comparison with Andy Tsz Hin Cho's edits:
Note that this user began/escalated some of his behaviors after the block of the sockmaster in August 2012, especially his pointless and provocative MoS violations and formatting changes. The community ban came into effect in February 2013. szyslak (t) 21:33, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Check declined by a checkuser. In order to facilitate and expedite your request, please provide diffs to support your case. Please give two or more diffs meeting the following format:

  1. At least one diff is from the sockmaster (or an account already blocked as a confirmed sockpuppet of the sockmaster), showing the behaviour characteristic of the sockmaster.
  2. At least one diff per suspected sockpuppet, showing the suspected sockpuppet emulating the behaviour of the sockmaster given in the first diff.
  3. In situations where it is not immediately obvious from the diffs what the characteristic behaviour is, a short explanation must be provided. Around one sentence is enough for this.

No diffs for the sockmaster were provided. --(ʞɿɐʇ) ɐuɐʞsǝp 11:19, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No checkuser needed here. IP 218.102.210.135 has settled into a week's worth of the exact kind of edits that have been associated with Chowkatsun9 and his many socks, including IP addresses from Hong Kong such as the current one. IP 218.102.210.135 has continued with pointless changes to the infobox of musician biographies, removing the spacing that makes for convenience in the edit window: [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. Here are similar actions by previous blocked socks: [17][18][19][20]

I would like to see this blocked editor stopped from disrupting the encyclopedia. Binksternet (talk) 04:19, 30 June 2013 (UTC) Binksternet (talk) 04:19, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

With this new name, Kelvinwholoveshide, the sockpuppeteer tells us that this is all just a game to him. The "kelvin" part of the name has been used by previous socks Chowkatsun kelvin, Nustakelvin, Nustakelvin (2), Kelvin Chow, Boy Kelvin and Andy-Kelvin. He is back to his usual tricks with changing infobox spacing and musician instruments.

Checkuser is requested because this guy often creates a raft of sleeper accounts at the same time. Binksternet (talk) 04:41, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

KWIAFOH has picked up where Chowkatsun9 and all of his socks left off. At the Taiji (musician) biography, KWIAFOH made this change to the formatting of the infobox, which is virtually the same edit as this one from sock Ka Ho Mickey Chow, and this one from the many 218.xx IP address socks from Hong Kong.

Hide with Yoshiki and Fans of most guitarists have picked up where Chowkatsun9 and all of his socks left off. At the Yip Sai Wing biography, Fans of most guitarists made this change to the formatting of the infobox (drastic reduction of spacing), which is the same style of edit as Hide with Yoshiki's infobox changes at the Jerry Dammers biography. Both of these infobox changes are the same as the Taiji (musician) biography changes made by sock Ka Ho Mickey Chow, and this one from sock KWIAFOH, as well as this one from the many 218.xx IP address socks from Hong Kong.

The new account Kelvin's page quickly resumed the unusual sort of infobox reformatting that is characteristic of Chowkatsun9. Kelvin's page edited Jimmy McCulloch here, removing spacing, changing the occupation parameter, etc. Confirmed Chowkatsun9 sock KWIAFOH made the same characteristic edits to the same article a few months ago.
The username "Kelvin's page" is similar to past socks such as "Chowkatsun kelvin", "Nustakelvin", "Kelvin Chow", "Boy Kelvin", "Andy-Kelvin", and "Kelvinwholoveshide". Checkuser is requested to root out any sleepers, which is a common tactic by this persistent socker. Binksternet (talk) 12:26, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Obvious name connections with previous socks using variations of "kelvin" and "chow". Same interest in musician biographies. Same behavior, especially the signature reduction of spaces in the infobox (which are there for editing convenience.) Examples by Kelvinchow221: [21][22]. This registered account has obvious name connection with previous accounts, and the same interest is shown in changing musician infoboxes, genres and occupations. This edit by Chowkatsunofficial to the Kitarō bio has many of the same changes to small details as this one by confirmed sock Andy Tsz Hin Cho, with one indicator being the reduction in both cases of the section header from a dated version ("Early life: 1954–76" or "1954–76: Early life") to an undated version: "Early life".

Gibson Zhou focuses on the same articles that interested Chowkatsun9 and the many other sockpuppets: Hide (musician), Yoshiki (musician), Brian May and Tom Petty. He's concerned with the instruments that a musician plays, and the roles the musician fills such as arranger, composer, etc. See Gibson Zhou's change to Yoshiki versus this and this change by KWIAFOH, a confirmed sockpuppet, with the focus on which instruments and which roles. The most revealing sign of Chowkatsun9 is his predilection for deleting the excess spaces in the infobox, these spaces typically kept in place for ease of editing. Here Gibson Zhou removes the spaces in the Brian May bio, just like blocked sock Andy-Kelvin did with Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison: [25][26]. Blocked sock Ka Ho Mickey Chow deleted the infobox spaces here at the Taiji bio.

Adding newly created accounts Kelvinlandel and Adlerlansingdon. Chowkatsun9 has often changed the nationality of the Bee Gees musical group to "English" though they were Manx-born, and first played as the Bee Gees and became famous while living in Australia. Here are a few examples of past Hong Kong IPs and confirmed socks calling them English:[79][80][81][82][83][84][85] Here's the newly created account Kelvinlandel calling them English:[86] Here's a recent Hong Kong IP calling them English:[87]

The newly created account Adlerlansingdon self-reverted[88][89] just like Eternalrockmusic[90][91], and [92][93]. Binksternet (talk) 07:36, 20 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pinkspider1998byckt and 謹慎的大麗花 were both created after the last SPI blocked a handful of accounts. These two new accounts and IP 203.218.168.230 edited in the same fashion as recent Chowkatsun9 socks. Binksternet (talk) 18:12, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Zhoukatsun was created back in January 2015 but was not investigated at that time.
  • This edit by Zhoukatsun shows the signature Chowkatsun9-style removal of spacing in the infobox. So do these other edits:[97][98]. Sockpuppet Withdrawndahlia added a composer category here to the Sugizo biography which was reverted, then Zhoukatsun re-added the category here as his first-ever edit.
  • This edit by sock Eternalrockmusic added "radio personality" to occupations and the category of "Hong Kong radio personalities" to the Dayo Wong biography, neither being supported by article text or references. Soon after Eternalrockmusic was blocked, 謹慎的大麗花 re-added the same radio personality stuff, adding television as well.[99]
  • This edit to the Beyond band article by Hong Kong IP 218.102.172.240 added "bandleader" to the role of Wong Ka Kui. This edit by Pinkspider1998byckt re-added "bandleader". Similarly, sock Eternalrockmusic removed a bunch of genres from the Wong Ka Kui biography, leaving "rock", then soon after Eternalrockmusic was blocked, Pinkspider1998byckt made the same genre changes.

They've been using the 61.92.198.74 IP exclusively since 2017. Very obvious sock by behavior, changing instruments etc. in Bee Gees and other articles. It was already blocked for two years in April 2018 as a sock of Chowkatsun9. The day it expired they came back to doing the same old thing, and have made many edits since then.

203.85.12.218 also has the same interests and behavior (except the film category edits on 2 June maybe being a little unusual?), and has been used exclusively by them since November 2019. Same geolocation, different network. --IamNotU (talk) 15:29, 7 June 2020 (UTC) IamNotU (talk) 15:29, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the five named accounts: Beyondfan2010, Ckt20200428, Beyond4ever, Aprayerforbeyond, and Prayforwkk. They are certainly socks of each other, and I think of Chowkatsun9. The names are not the typical variations, except for the second one starting with "Ckt". Also they have not edited any Bee Gees articles. Nevertheless, the behavior is otherwise very similar and crosses over with the IPs as well as previous named accounts. None of them are currently editing, but I'm reporting them for the record, and because I would like to revert their edits along with the sock IPs. I know that checkusers can't connect IPs with accounts, but maybe one could help to connect these with previous sock accounts? --IamNotU (talk) 01:47, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Vanjagenije: sure, I can provide more information and diffs, and sorry about the delay.
Chowkatsun9 endlessly fiddles and tweaks musicians' roles, instruments, and genres, sometimes udoing their own editing, with characteristic edit summaries like "musician x is (not) known for playing this instrument". They target a unique cluster of articles, especially related to the bands Beyond, X Japan, and the Bee Gees. Socks can be most easily identified by just looking at their overall edit history and crossover for this pattern, rather than one or two specific diffs, but I'll try.
IP 61.92.198.74 was already blocked six times as a sock of Chowkatsun9, the last time for two years. Comparing the edit history across the gaps between September 2017, April 2018, and April-June 2020 shows it's unquestionably the same person, with the same patterns as other socks, mainly edits to members of Hong Kong band Beyond: [109], [110], [111], [112] (compare also with the original account: Wong Ka Kui: [113], Wong Ka Keung: [114], Yip Sai Wing: [115] (note the comments in HTML for these) and Paul Wong (musician) and the many edits to those articles by more recent socks, e.g. Kaaatsunnn (talk · contribs): [116], [117], 2016-2018 blocked range 202.40.208.0/21: [118], [119], [120], etc. etc.) and X Japan members (hide, Taiji, Yoshiki, Toshi, Pata, Heath, and Sugizo) and their respective albums: [121], [122], [123] (compare with confirmed socks: [124], [125], [126], [127], etc.), as well as Bee Gees members: [128], [129], [130], [131] (compare with e.g. confirmed socks: [132], [133], [134], [135], and many others).
They are about the only person who edits the Ellen Joyce Loo article in recent years, here from confirmed socks and blocked IPs: [136], [137], [138], [139], [140], [141]. Compare with 61.92.198.74: [142] as well as Beyondfan2010 whom I'm reporting: [143].
The second Hong Kong IP 203.85.12.218 has the same patterns, editing Beyond members: [144], [145]; X Japan members: [146], [147], [148] and member hide's solo album Pink Spider: [149], [150], compare with confirmed sock Pinkspider1998byckt (talk · contribs) and blocked IP:[151]; as well as Bee Gees: [152], [153], [154], etc., and miscellaneous typical edits: [155], [156], [157].
Neither IP has edited for a few days now, but they are obviously static IPs that have been used exclusively by them sine 2017 and 2019.
Beyondfan2010, in addition to the tell-tale Ellen Joyce Loo edit and the Beyond articles, edited X Japan articles: [158], [159], [160], [161], etc. Beyondfan2010 appears to be the last in a series of accounts most obviously seen in the history of Beyond member Wong Ka Kui, and they cross over with the IPs. On 3 December, 203.85.12.218 made a typical edit & summary: [162], then continued on 30 December with several more edits and tweaks: [163]. An hour later, new account Prayforwkk continued with the same type of edits for a couple of days: [164] including adding date ranges to section headers as done in other articles: [165]. Two days later, another new account Aprayerforbeyond took over for a couple more days, with edits including again adding dates to section headings e.g. [166] etc., followed a few days later by new account Beyond4ever making similar edits: [167]. Beyondfan2010 arrived a couple of months later, and briefly Ckt20200428 who has only two edits, but a similar username, compare to Pinkspider1998byckt. A similar pattern is found in Paul Wong.
Unnameduser522 was added by Binksternet who has given an explanation below. It does look like a lot of crossover, particularly with 203.85.12.218, see this interaction report: [168]. Chowkatsun also edits some articles of Hong Kong singers who are also actors, such as Leslie Cheung, Nick Cheung, and Aaron Kwok, who have all won Hong Kong Film Awards, and director Stephen Chow. --IamNotU (talk) 17:57, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

RoySmith, ok, let's do it in two parts then, shall we? I will work on a more concise presentation about the named accounts. In the meantime, can we deal with the IPs? They are very obvious, I'm 100% certain. They've been happily editing away for months now, including today. Can we get them blocked? Or do you need more (or less) info about them?

Five other admins have previously blocked 61.92.198.74, and it's clearly the same person back again to the same patterns after the last two-year block expired, and 203.85.12.218 is the same too. See their geolocations: [169], [170] and just a couple of examples of Bee Gees edits with the habits of endlessly nitpicking over instruments and typical edit summaries:

  • June 2020: 61.92.198.74 [171] I think "keyboards" can be added as Gibb's secondary instrument for he was known for keyboards on early Bee Gees songs. Also, he wrote music on this sort of instruments.
  • May 2020: 203.85.12.218 [172] Gibb not specialising only in piano but also Hammond organ, Mellotron, Moog synthesiser
  • April 2018: 61.92.198.74 [173] Gibb played a variety of keyboards not only the piano; wrong link (Jimmy Stevens)
  • August 2017: 61.92.198.74 [174] Maurice Gibb played the guitar as often as the bass and keyboards

Compare to blocked/confirmed socks:

  • October 2017: 202.40.211.134 (part of 202.40.208.0/21, same geolocation, range blocked here: [175]):Gibb always played the guitar on the Bee Gees' numbers as well as contributing the bass and keyboards.
  • March 2017: 202.40.211.116 (same blocked range) GIbb should be more known as an instrumentalist. In the Bee Gees' numbers he always played the bass, the keyboard, or the guitar. About singing, he just sang lead in about three songs from the album.
  • September 2016: Welikehk (cu confirmed sock): [176] In the post years of the Bee Gees, Gibb played acoustic guitar in recordings and live
  • October 2018: Kaaatsunnn (cu confirmed sock): [177] Not a famous rock singer and he's at most a pop rock singer.
  • Various other socks: Carsonkelvin [178], Kelkelkatsun [179], Katsunkelonly [180], etc.

The other part of the pattern is the idiosyncratic set of articles, particularly the Bee Gees plus X Japan and its members Hide, Toshi, Yoshiki, Pata, etc., as well as Beyond and its members. You can see this in their timeline and interactions. Does that work? Let's get the IPs out of the way first, and I'll try to work on the others. --IamNotU (talk) 22:58, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • New user Unnameduser522 has been editing the same quirky group of biographies that all Chowkatsun9 socks have been interested in (X Japan, Bee Gees, Hong Kong singers). Unnameduser522 created a category and then added it to seven of these biographies.[181][182] This new category was picked up by Hong Kong IP 203.85.12.218 and added to a lot more biographies,[183][184] This same IP then removed the categories.[185][186] It's not at all unusual for Chowkatsun9 to try out his ideas and then change his mind and undo them. The IP 203.85.12.218 has also been editing the same biographies as Chowkatsun9 and socks. Binksternet (talk) 01:19, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  •   Additional information needed - @IamNotU: In order to facilitate and expedite your request, please provide diffs to support your case.
Vanjagenije (talk) 07:55, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • IamNotU, I read through most of this, and unfortunately, I'm just not seeing the kind of evidence we need to support a CU endorsement. Part of the problem is that you've given so much information, it's hard to digest. Could you boil this down to some very concise statements like: "compare <this edit by sock-1> to <this edit by sock-2>", where those edits clearly show commonality of purpose? I looked at the interaction report and I'm not seeing anything more than a bunch of people who share an interest in Chinese popular music. -- RoySmith (talk) 01:55, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets

I guess there was some misunderstanding about the previous report, because I did reply last month and nobody responded, but anyway... I'll try again. I'll leave out the older accounts for now so as not to muddy the waters. The IPs are very obvious, and still editing. 61.92.198.74 has been blocked six times already as a Chowkatsun9 sock, and is continuing the same patterns two years later, as is 203.85.12.218. The edits look to be exclusively theirs since 2017 and 2019 respectively. See their geolocations in Hong Kong: [187], [188], also matching the previously-blocked IP geolocations, and just a few examples of Bee Gees / brothers Gibb edits with the habits of endlessly fussing over what instruments they are "known for":

  • June 2020: 61.92.198.74 [189] I think "keyboards" can be added as Gibb's secondary instrument for he was known for keyboards on early Bee Gees songs. Also, he wrote music on this sort of instruments.
  • June 2020: 203.85.12.218 [190] Remove the comma, known for being a Bee Gees member more than a solo artist
  • May 2020: 203.85.12.218 [191] Gibb not specialising only in piano but also Hammond organ, Mellotron, Moog synthesiser
  • April 2018: 61.92.198.74 [192] Gibb played a variety of keyboards not only the piano; wrong link (Jimmy Stevens)
  • August 2017: 61.92.198.74 [193] Maurice Gibb played the guitar as often as the bass and keyboards

Compare to blocked/confirmed socks:

  • October 2017: 202.40.211.134 (part of 202.40.208.0/21, same geolocation, range blocked here: [194]): Gibb always played the guitar on the Bee Gees' numbers as well as contributing the bass and keyboards.
  • March 2017: 202.40.211.116 (same blocked range): GIbb should be more known as an instrumentalist. In the Bee Gees' numbers he always played the bass, the keyboard, or the guitar. About singing, he just sang lead in about three songs from the album.
  • September 2016: Welikehk (cu confirmed sock): [195] In the post years of the Bee Gees, Gibb played acoustic guitar in recordings and live
  • October 2018: Kaaatsunnn (cu confirmed sock): [196] Not a famous rock singer and he's at most a pop rock singer.
  • Various other socks: Carsonkelvin [197], Kelkelkatsun [198], Katsunkelonly [199], etc.

Karsonhopachau is a new sock with a typical user name variation (see Carsonkelvin, and "chau" vs. "chow", etc.) and typical edits about the Gibbs' instruments:

  • Karsonhopachau: [200] Elaborated their instruments played in different phases. Also, Barry Gibb primarily on vocals and guitar, Robin Gibb primarily on vocals only, and Maurice Gibb on bass, guitar, piano and keyboards. It's enough to mention their other instruments played in "band members"'s introduction only., which reinstates a 61.92.198.74 edit from a couple of days earlier: [201], and compare with similar edits by old blocked IPs and obvious socks: [202], [203], [204], etc.
  • Karsonhopachau adding section headings: [205], 203.85.12.218 the next day adjusting them: [206], then 11 minutes later Karsonhopachau editing again: [207]. A couple of days later 61.92.198.74 fiddling with them again: [208]

The other part of the pattern is the idiosyncratic set of articles. It's particularly the Bee Gees, plus the Japanese band X Japan and its members Hide, Toshi, Yoshiki, Pata, etc., as well as the Hong Kong band Beyond and its members Wong Ka Kui, Wong Ka Keung, Yip Sai Wing, and Paul Wong. You can see this in their timeline and their interaction with each other and some recent socks. Compare also with the previously blocked range 202.40.208.0/21.

From previous behavior, there are likely to be other accounts and/or sleepers. --IamNotU (talk) 01:52, 26 July 2020 (UTC) IamNotU (talk) 01:52, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
